Four contractors are on the starting grid for a £30m roads
project in north Devon.
The county council has lined up Costain, Hochtief, Balfour Beatty
and Nuttall to tackle the Barnstaple Western Bypass.
A council source said: "Seven firms applied for the project. We met
them all and it was generally agreed to ask only four to price it
because of the expense involved in bidding for design and construct
schemes."
It is understood that a member of Friends of the Earth has now
applied to the Court of Appeal in an effort to overturn the
government's decision to approve the project.
But a council spokesman said: "We're not really expecting any
problems and the road programme is going according to plan."
The council will award the contract in December, with work on site
expected to start in April 2004 and run for 30 months.
The job includes 4.7km of new and realigned highway, four major
junctions, a five-span bridge over the River Taw, plus extensive
drainage and earthworks.
