Demands for timber seizure
Greenpeace has demanded that the government seize a huge cargo of
illegal timber from Indonesia's rainforests that has arrived in
London.
Greenpeace forest campaigner John Sauven said: "The logging, export
and sale of this timber is nothing short of organised crime. Behind
each sheet of plywood that originates in Indonesia's rainforests
there is a web of criminal activity, corruption and bloodshed.
Governments worldwide must reject this illegal timber."
A Timber Trade Federation (TTF) spokesman said: "Green-peace must
remember that only 4% of Indonesia's timber yield enters the UK
market, with 75% going to Japan and China. We are therefore very
small players. We are, however, determined to do what we can to
place Indonesia's forestry sector on a more sustainable footing by
remaining fully engaged. Greenpeace's approach will do nothing
other than displace the UK market with less environmentally
sensitive markets like China."
TTF launched its own Action Plan in July 2003, aiming to source
exclusively legal timber from Indonesia.
Jewson and Travis Perkins have stopped supplying Indon-esia's
plywood because of concerns about illegal timber trading.
