RMC has published its first corporate responsibility document. The
document describes an ongoing initiative on health and safety
benchmarking led by RMC in collaboration with more than 20 other
companies in the construction industry and beyond.
Richard Claydon, RMC's international and UK health and safety
manager, said: "Two years ago we wanted to identify organisations
that we could compare health and safety data with so we could learn
from the better performers.
"We decided it was important that we swapped information with firms
in other sectors, not just construction. We then cold-called
companies to see if they would be interested in exchanging
information with us. To date, we have 25 different firms that we
swap data with on an annual basis. It is approaching a comfortable
level, but we are still open to new firms joining."
The benchmarking initiative allows a comparison of rates for fatal
incidents, major injuries and lost-time injuries.
"In identifying the better performers we can discuss with them some
of the initiatives they've introduced. If they have worked well for
them then we can work out how to adapt their initiatives to our
needs," Claydon said.
