Government to ditch Las Vegas-style casinos for UK
The development of vast Las Vegas-style casino hotels in the UK now
seems unlikely.
The government is due to announce the results of its review of the
UK's tough gaming laws tomorrow (Tuesday).
The review began two years ago and was thought likely to favour
Vegas-style developments.
Plans are already well advanced for schemes in Blackpool, Olympia
in London, near Newcastle United's ground and at the Meadowhall
shopping centre in Sheffield.
However, according to weekend press reports, anti-gaming ministers
have won the day, watering down proposals to simply allowing more
slot machines to be installed in casinos.
According to The Sunday Times, the Treasury has calculated
that the £500m a year extra in revenue it would have received
is not enough to warrant fully relaxing gaming laws.
