The Association of Brickwork Contractors
(ABC) has set a target of taking on 100 apprentices in 2004.
"Apprenticeships are the future life-blood of our industry," said
Geoff Irvine, managing director of Irvine Whitlock Brickwork
Contractors and chairman of the Association.
"The government drive to increase higher education places is
raising student perception of the many vocational opportunities
available and so schools are paying more attention to the
construction industry."
In 2003, the 19 members of the ABC recruited 77 apprentices, which
was well above the Association's target of 45.
"With membership now 20 companies and rising, we will be promoting
the Association's comprehensive employment charter and its members'
commitment to training and education to encourage a larger response
in 2004," added Irvine.
