BAA is not tightening up security on T5

BAA has played down a story, due to appear in a trade publication on Thursday, concerning the apparent "tightening up" of security on the T5 project.

The article claims that extra security measures in the form of three new weighbridges are being introduced at the entrance to the site to measure the transfer of materials.

The story also attempts to link the introduction of the new measures with groundworks subcontractor Geofirma Soils Engineering being recently kicked off site due to "accounting irregularities".

BAA has vehemently denied the link with a spokeswoman adding that the "operation of the weighbridges at the T5 entrance plaza was not an issue in the Geofirma investigation". In fact the weighbridges were installed in June last year.

She also added that reviews of security at T5 are "nothing unusual and nothing new".

"Processes at T5 are constantly under review and as a consequence of this additional procedures have been introduced to further improve the management of bulk materials to and from site," she said. "All vehicles entering or leaving the site are subject to a range of security measures."
