Perkins Engines, one of the main power providers to plant
manufacturers, will provide Stage 3A- compliant versions of its
1100D series family of engines with either electronic or mechanical
fuel injection.
The new engines will produce 51% additional torque and 43% more
power than their Stage 2 counterparts, while maintaining the same
500hr service
intervals.
Using the Acert technology of parent company Caterpillar, Perkins
will be able to offer electronically-controlled engines that can
interface with other systems governing, say, the transmission,
suspension, brakes and so on.
It will also market a mechanically-injected engine that has the
beauty of simplicity, but without the added benefits that come with
electronics.
Re-engineering the valve gear train, timing case, block and sump
have all helped reduce the engine noise by 5dB(A), but the heat
rejection to coolant remains the same, so no cooling system
modifications are required. The engine mounting points remain
identical to those on the Stage 2 engines.
n Perkins and Japan's Ishikawajima Shibaura Mach-inery have signed
a joint venture agreement that will see a range of two, three and
four-cylinder engines, based on the 400 series, built in the USA at
Griffin, Georgia.
