The Major Contractors Group (MCG) has named four key site health
risks as targets for action as part of an industry occupational
health strategy.
They are: hand/arm vibration syndrome; dermatitis; muscular
skeletal disorders; and noise-induced hearing loss.
The MCG has published a set of occupational health guidelines as
part of its overall health and safety strategy. The guide focuses
primarily on identifying and managing those at greatest risk. It
includes self-assessment forms that are designed to provide a
simple indicator of those who may have a work-related health
problem.
"The successful implementation of arrangements to manage
occupational ill-health will depend to a large extent on the
participation of the workforce," the MCG said.
"The workforce often associates management interest in ill-health
with redundancy and restricted employment. To overcome these
perceptions, every effort must be made to encourage effective
workforce involvement and consultation."
The document underlines the importance of keeping health records.
