Two vie for Ipswich PFI health deal
Two groups are on the waiting list for a £24m PFI hospital
deal in Suffolk.
The Summit consortium, fronted by Sir Robert McAlpine, and the
Prospect group, headed up by Kier, will work up bids to build an
extension to the Ipswich Hospital.
A project source said: "Several firms initially expressed interest
in the contract, but only two followed it through. With so many PFI
schemes tumbling out of the system, the others told us that their
resources would be stretched too far if they committed to yet
another project."
The new building will be known as the Garratt Anderson wing, named
after the first woman doctor who was born in nearby
Aldeburgh.
The extension will feature a critical care centre, day surgery, a
ward, plus accident and emergency facilities.
The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust hopes to have its preferred bidder
on board by December.
Work on site is expected to start early in 2006, with completion
set at 18 months.
The maintain and operate concession will run for 30 years.
