Verdict of accidental death on welder crushed by scaffold
A Southwark Coroner's Court jury returned an accidental death
verdict in the case of a welder crushed to death while working on
the Hungerford Bridge across the Thames two years ago.
Ismail Altun was dismantling a temporary scaffold platform, which
was on the site on the south side of the Thames on 10 November
2002.
According to witnesses, the structure moved and Altun became
trapped. The pathologist gave the cause of death as crush injuries
to the chest and abdomen.
Crane driver Derek Travis said he believed Altun should not have
been where he was when the accident took place.
Altun was employed by Rochester-based K&N Welding, which was
engaged on the £40m bridge project being built by a
Costain/Norwest Holst jv.
A Health & Safety Executive (HSE) spokesman said: "It was a
tragic accident. The HSE is endeavouring to investigate fully."
