Aggregate Industries (AI) has been working closely with the British
Paralympic Association (BPA) to develop a sports surface material,
which through design, reduces resistance for wheelchair users and
is coloured for greater definition for the partially sighted.
Bardon PlayAble is suitable for multi-use games areas - from grass
roots sport through to elite sporting use.
The BPA link up is the result of AI's sector management initiative,
introduced last summer to target clients in specific sectors.
Sports and leisure sector manager Helen Little told CJ: "The
interesting and challenging aspect of the role is that I can take
an idea from concept all the way through its development and then
into the marketplace. We used to develop a product and then find a
market for it - now we're reversing that process."
As a key manufacturer and supplier member of the Sports and Play
Construction Association, AI has been working closely on key
specification updates for the design and construction of sports
pitches and play areas.
Little has been working closely with sports clubs, leisure
facilities and professional clubs such as Charlton Athletic.
Garside Sands, AI's specialist silica sand business in Leighton
Buzzard, has seen sports and leisure product sales go from fourth
in its market portfolio into first place since the introduction of
sector managers.
A new product development involving Garside Sands is Starmat - a
material for greyhound and equestrian racing and training use.
"Starmat eliminates sand burn on the dog's feet, kick back into
dogs' and horses' eyes, and saves huge amounts of water
maintenance, while providing
a controlled running surface for all-year round racing,"
Little said.
"AI can offer a full system package for all sporting needs, from
the construction of the sports areas, including sublayer drainage
systems, all the way up to roofing products. AI offers
infrastructure expertise using sustainable urban drainage system
designs, recycled materials, as well as full material design,"
Little added.
