Wembley steel erectors vote to strike

Steel erectors working for Cleveland Bridge at Wembley Stadium have voted to strike over pay. However, as with the T5 ballot, turnout was low.

Of the 58 Cleveland staff who are members of Amicus, 27 voted for a strike, while five voted against. Asked if they would support action short of a strike, 29 voted in favour, while just two voted against; some ballot papers were spoiled.

Cleveland is employing 100 workers at Wembley, the majority of which are Amicus members. The remainder are GMB members or are not affiliated with a union. Results of the GMB ballots on 16 sites are due soon.

The Wembley result follows hot on the heels of the T5 result. Just 35 of Watson Steel's 90 staff on the project voted: 26 voted in favour of a strike, while nine voted against.
