EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR DRAINAGE WORKS AT BIRKENHEAD PARK
WIRRAL
Birkenhead Park is the first publicly funded park
in Britain, opening in 1847. It is registered as
Grade I within the English Heritage Register and
lies within a conservation area. The park is
founded upon Joseph Paxton's drainage system that
drained a local wetland and enabled the creation
of this important landmark park.
The culvert acts as the spine of the park and is
approximately 1.1km in length. The culvert has a
typical cross section of 0.9m high by 0.6m wide
with a flat base and top. It is constructed with
sandstone blocks and slabs with open joints. Land
drainage connections were laid along the Park's
paths and connect to the culvert throughout its
length. The culvert is believed to have a clay
surround.
Expressions of interest are invited from suitably
qualified contractors interested in the
restoration of the culvert located within the
Park.
The anticipated value of the project is £350,000.
The culvert restoration is part of the major
restoration of the Grade I Registered Park which
is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the
European Regional Development Fund.
