Banksman to watch for sniper

Lookouts are being used on Scott Wilson and Jackson Civil Engineering's £10.6m Alvaston bypass contract near Derby after a maintenance worker was recently shot and wounded by a sniper with an air rifle.

The unnamed worker for landscape contractor Tilhill was cutting a grass verge as part of ongoing maintenance work on the newly-constructed 2km dual carriageway when he was shot in the leg by the hidden shooter.

Workers were immediately called off site when the alarm was raised. They have only been allowed back on site following the appointment of a banksman.

This is the first time that a lookout has been used on a highways job and he will have the power to call workers immediately off site if he spots anything suspicious.
