Written applications are invited from suitably
qualified and experienced contractors wishing to
be considered for inclusion on the Select List of
Tenderers for the following project:-
LONGBRIDGE STRENGTHENING
Longbridge is situated to the east of Marsh Mills
Flyover and carries the Plympton bound two lane
carriageway (B3416-Plymouth Road) over the River
Plym. The original bridge is a three span masonry
arch structure, which has been widened to the
south. The widening consists of reinforced
concrete beam and slab construction supported on
reinforced concrete columns and masonry retaining
walls.
The works comprise demolition of the widened

section, installation of piled foundations and a
single span (30m) precast bridge beams, casting
of new deck slab followed by waterproofing,
erection of vehicular parapet and resurfacing.
Traffic safety and management will be of
paramount importance during the works. It is
envisaged that a two lane carriageway will be
maintained with temporary pedestrian diversion
via the existing footbridge to the north. Budget
Cost - circa £450,000.
Contractors will need to have experience of
partnering and collaborative working and be able
to contribute to innovative solutions.
The issue of tender documents is programmed for
September 2004 with the proposed provisional
commencement of the works on site in October 2004.
Applicants must have the necessary resource and
expertise to act as Principal Contractor in
compliance with the Construction (Design and
Management) Regulations, 1994.
