The construction of the London Centre for Nanotechnology by
Bluestone is running six months later than expected and £2m
over budget.
The company began construction on the £10.5m project in
February 2003, and was scheduled to finish in May, but this has now
been extended to 29 November.
A Bluestone spokesman said the extra work was agreed between the
contractor and the client, University College London. "We're
working to an agreed extended programme. It's the cutting edge of
technology, so the department's needs have changed from the initial
contract," he said.
Meanwhile, Crestahead, a subcontractor involved on the project,
went into administrative receivership last week.
A Bluestone spokesman denied that the failure of Crestahead would
affect the project. He described Crestahead as a labour-only
subcontractor working for another subcontractor. Reading-based
Bridgers took charge of Crestahead last week.
The Bluestone spokesman said: "We're paying our subcontractors on
time. I don't know what the problem is, but it hasn't come out on
site."
