Bust-up brews at Cottam over safety issues
A major row is brewing at the Cottam power station site over
allegations of safety violations and drug abuse.
A project joint council meeting under the National Engineering
Construction Industry (NAECI) agreement is scheduled for this week,
when it is hoped that
any site grievances will be resolved.
"I am trying to keep it on the rails," said Amicus union official
Jim Simms. "But it is looking a bit rocky."
Simms said the concerns of local workers had been sparked by the
use of imported Portuguese workers on the job by French contractor
EDF.
Initially it had been claimed that the immigrant operatives were
not being paid the
nationally agreed NAECI rates. That matter has since been
resolved.
Most of the Portuguese have now left the job. However, there are
fresh allegations of unsafe working with scaffolding being moved,
and of widespread drug abuse.
