New Zealand looks to UK workers

UK construction professionals loking to work abroad could find themselves in demand in New Zealand.

The country is suffering from acute skills shortages. £1.1bn of planned public and private sector work over the next two years is under threat unless 3,000 skilled workers are found.

Hays Construction & Property has launched a recruitment drive to attract UK candidates. Jason Walker, Hays general manager in New Zealand, said: "We have noticed that the scale and scope of projects throughout all of New Zealand, and the resultant vacancies and lifestyle on offer are creating increased interest from overseas applicants. New Zealand offers stunning natural beauty and a great lifestyle, while UK candidates will of course experience no language barriers, making New Zealand an attractive destination for working holidays."

There are vacancies in engineering, building services, architecture and quantity surveying and for construction professionals. Salaries are increasing as the skills shortage bites: carpenters who were earning $NZ20 an hour are now being paid $NZ32 an hour.
