Amey takes £300m highways deal

Amey has beaten Accord, Alfred McAlpine and Raynesway to Cumbria County Council's highways framework deal worth up to £300m.
The contract is for seven years, plus a three-year extension subject to performance, and is expected to reach financial close this autumn.
Cumbria CC's Contract Services Construction Unit's 400-strong workforce will be transferred to Amey under TUPE rules for the contract start date of 1 April 2005.
Under the terms of the contract, Amey will assume responsibility for the maintenance of approximately 7,700km of highway, 1,700 bridges and 44,000 street lights.
A council spokesman said that the preferred bidder announcement had emerged earlier than expected due to "good management of the procurement process".
Amey scored "significantly higher than the other three bidders", he said.
