Former Cleveland Bridge steel workers and welders in pay dispute
A dispute is on the cards over the terms and conditions Fast Track
is offering the 250 welders and steel workers formerly employed by
Cleveland Bridge at Wembley.
The men were taken on in a deal brokered by Multiplex, Fast Track
and the unions, after Cleveland quit the project. Now the workers
are complaining that Fast Track is changing terms and
conditions.
One site source said: "Fast Track said it would honour the men's
previous terms and conditions. Then it demanded weekend working be
compulsory. Previously the men had a choice about whether they
worked the weekends. When the men complained, Fast Track came back
and said there will be no overtime, just a 38-hour week."
Another site source said: "The men's attitude is a disgrace. Fast
Track took all these men on in good faith. It didn't have to take
all of them, but it did - and on the same pay. Now they are
demanding continuity of terms and conditions, which they are not
even entitled to because they were made redundant by Cleveland.
Some of these men blame Multiplex for what happened to Cleveland
and want revenge."
