Morgan Vinci reinforces its sinking road

Morgan Vinci is hopeful that it will deliver its £55m Southern Distributor Road PFI in south Wales on time, despite an area of the road sinking recently.

Last month, it was discovered that a section of the new road in Newport had sunk by 50mm due to the fact that the road had been built over a former rubbish tip.

The project team has spent the past two weeks laying reinforced concrete slabs to give better weight distribution.

“We knew that there might be a problem with the rubbish tip right from the design stage,” said a Vinci spokeswoman. “The problem has now been rectified and we are on track to deliver the scheme sometime in the autumn.”

The contractor’s project manager Peter Frood added that other repairs were taking place on site following vandalism by children on noise reduction fencing near residential areas.

A completion date for the project is due to be decided this week.
