FTA launches guide for driving at work

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has launched a new compliance guide highlighting the risks of driving at work.
According to the FTA there are some 300 deaths in the transport workplace every year and it estimates that a third of all road fatalities (over 1,100 deaths) and serious injuries involve drivers who are working at the time.
Since 2003, the emphasis for the safety of drivers at work moved from the Road Traffic Act to the Health & Safety at Work Act. This requires employers to carry out risk assessments of all employees who drive as part of their employment, and take action to reduce risk.
The new Driving At Work Compliance Guide provides advice on how employers and employees can remain compliant. It includes examples of driving at work policies for both car and goods vehicle drivers. These guidleines, the FTA said, can form the basis of a company policy.
Copies of the new guide can be downloaded from www.fta.co.uk/services/health/index.htm.
