Two left in battle for Devon road scheme
The race for a £25m to £30m roads deal in north Devon has
narrowed to two contenders.
Insiders say that the county council is now only talking to Balfour
Beatty and Edmund Nuttall about the Barnstaple Western
Bypass.
It is understood that pitches from Hochtief and Costain, the other
two bidders, have stalled.
The council is expected to award the design and construct contract
later this month.
The job includes 4.7km of new and realigned highway, four major
junctions, a five-span bridge over the River Taw,
plus extensive drainage and earthworks.
The construction period for the bypass, which links the
A361 with the A39, is set at 30 months.
Seven firms originally applied for the deal, but the council agreed
to ask only four of them to price it "because of the expense
involved in bidding for design and construct schemes".
