Industry urges rethink on sustainable spending
Government spending on sustainable construction materials should be
more flexible,
according to the Construction Products Association.
Head of environment and industry performance Rita Singh said: "We
need to consider the whole life of materials - just looking at the
recycled content doesn't guarantee sustainability over 60
years."
Singh's comments came before the association met with the Waste and
Resources Action Programme to discuss the funding body's role in
sustainable construction products.
Singh said government grants to construction products firms should
take more than recycling into account.
"We don't want the regulations to be so restrictive that innovation
is prevented. The aim is getting the best performance out of
products. We want to make sure products used are the most
sustainable and cost-effective over their lifetime," she said.
