Traffic noise scheme snubbed
A Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) road
traffic noise mapping scheme has met a cold response from the
Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA).
The £500,000 scheme maps traffic noise across London as part
of a National Ambient Noise Strategy for 2007.
A DEFRA spokeswoman said: "When we know where the most affected
areas are, we can better direct our resources to deal with the
problem." She added that the authorities would look at products
such as porous asphalt and noise barriers.
However, an AIA spokesman said the association did not expect a
greater demand in materials. "We don't think it's going to have a
massive impact on road surfacing," he said.
He said car engines were the main noise polluters at speeds of less
than 40mph.
