TUC wary of employment status review

A government policy statement on the legal definition of employment status is expected this autumn, according to the TUC. But the union body is already warning against a piecemeal response.
The TUC has urged the government to replace the existing "employee" and "worker" definitions with a new and comprehensive definition of a "worker". This would cover all economically dependent workers, including agency workers.
The unions have been encouraged by pledges made by the Prime Minister. He said the government will:
n<2002>Publish proposals on corporate manslaughter in the current parliamentary session.
n<2002>Introduce legislation to ensure corporations are prosecuted for a serious criminal offence where they show wilful disregard for their employees that results in death.

n<2002>Support the EU directive on agency workers.
n<2002>Extend paid holiday entitlement - additional to the eight days of public holiday.
n<2002>Improve protection for migrant workers.
Blair added that the government is "committed to ensuring that people are able to exercise a genuine choice about the hours they work".
