August orders improve


New construction orders improved by 29% in August to reach £3.1bn. However improvements were not as strong in the three months to August and in the year to August.

Public housing more than doubled its orders value year-on-year from £63m to £134m.  Strong growth was also enjoyed by private housing and infrastructure (both up 42%) and private industrial (up 49%). Other public moved forward 14%, while private commercial grew just 4%.

In the three months to August, public housing improved 35%, private housing 30%, and private commercial 26%. Private industrial was up 12% and other public improved 11%. However, infrastructure was down 9% on the three months August 2003.

In the year to August, infrastructure remained depressed, being 25% down on the year ago period. Other public was static and private industrial improved 5%. Private commercial, private housing and public housing enjoyed strong growth of 16%, 22% and 27% respectively.
