DVLA proposes fee for SORN vehicles
The DVLA has issued a consultation document proposing that all
registered vehicles be subject to a £4.50 tax even if they are
not currently taxed for use on the road.
Such a move could hit plant owners who register items like dumpers,
excavators, backhoes and telehandlers so they can occasionally be
used on the road.
Instead of just declaring the machine SORN when it is no longer
required for use on the road, the owner would be faced with the
residual £4.50 annual tax and related paperwork.
The proposal also sees the £4.50 added to the Vehicle Excise
Duty rates of all categories.
While the fee is not large, Nigel Humphries from the Association of
British Drivers said the move sets a dangerous precedent with the
individual having to pay for their
property data to be kept on somebody else's computer. He also
points out that once imposed, there is nothing to stop the fee
rising.
The consultation period ends on 8 November.
