Site accidents cost £1.9bn
The full cost to employers of all site accidents and work-related
ill health in construction is as much as £1.9bn a year,
according to an updated analysis by the Health & Safety
Executive (HSE).
In construction, the HSE said the annual costs to employers are
believed to be:
n Ill health: up to £180m.
n Accidents resulting in injuries: £140m.
n Non-injury accidents: up to £1.6bn.
Overall, the HSE estimates the cost of accidents and work-related
ill health to society as a whole at up to £31.8bn a year.
In all industries, the cost to employers is put at anything up to
£7.8bn. The cost to individuals is said to be £14.7bn.
And the cost to the economy is estimated at up to
£22.2bn.
Costs are estimated in 15 different categories, ranging from: lost
earnings; sick pay and compensation to damages; insurance costs;
loss of output; and administrative costs.
