Offsite manufacturers blasted
Lord Rooker gave UK offsite manufacturers a wake-up call last week
when he told the sector to "get its act together".
Speaking at Modern Methods of Construction, the minister of state
for regeneration said: "Most of the investment, even in this growth
area, will be done by the private sector. The Office of the Deputy
Prime Minister's role is to make sure the climate for investment is
there - certainly in making sure land is available."
But when questioned by CJ, Lord Rooker said market forces would
decide whether products come from UK firms or abroad. "I would
prefer to get as much from here as possible, but homes must be
built and if [contractors] get products from the Far East that's
what they will do. If the industry doesn't get its act together, it
will miss out on a good opportunity."
Mtech Group managing director Darren Richards said the industry was
close to producing the volumes required for cost effectiveness. "We
are months away from beating traditional construction on cost."
