Construction chiefs not leading by example
Construction chiefs not leading by example Company chiefs in construction are poor leaders, according to a survey.
The Chartered Management Institute's Inspired Leadership report reveals that less than four in 10 construction managers demonstrate "real confidence and trust in teams", "respect for employees, colleagues an customers" and "genuine shared vision" - the three key characteristics respondents want to see in managers.
A total of 64% said their managing director is out of touch with how staff feel. Only 40% said their managing director chatted to staff, and just 14% experienced an open-door policy.
Nearly half of the respondents (43%) claimed their leaders talk more than they listen.
Alarmingly, 90% said their boss doesn't trust them.
However, 60% of managers said their boss presents an honest and open face, while 65% admired their chief's clear standards, ethics and integrity.
