CSCS chairman George Brumwell has warned contractors to be on the
watch for fraudulent CSCS skill cards. It is claimed that, as
demand for the CSCS cards has increased, so has the incidence of
suspect or fraudulent cards.
"It's not a big problem at the moment," Brumwell said. "But we are
asking contractors and clients to carry out checks.
"Any increase in fraudulent cards does indicate the extent to which
they are becoming a site passport."
The scheme's management adds that it has been established with the
Crown Prosecution Service that to carry, present or manufacture
false cards is a criminal offence in UK law.
"A relatively small number of suspect cases have been reported,"
the CSCS said. "But successful prosecutions are difficult unless
appropriate action is taken immediately."
Contractors are advised that the CSCS call centre (01485 578777)
can confirm the validity of suspect cards. If a card appears to be
fraudulent, contractors are asked to retain it, forward copies to
the CSCS and to report the matter to the police.
