Alfred McAlpine has today (Friday) reached financial close on its 30-year, £190m Addenbrooke's Hospital PFI in Cambridge.
Alfred McAlpine was made preferred bidder in August as part of its partnership with NIB Capital Bank.
The project comprises a new facility added to existing buildings, which will improve healthcare provision at the hospital, helping to meet government targets for the reduction of waiting times for operations, and improve the services for patients. Work is expected to take 117 weeks.
The new seven-floor, concrete frame building will house a 31,000m2 elective care (non-emergency) centre that will include facilities for endoscopy, genetics and diabetes, plus critical facilities such as sterilisation units and operating theatres, and university laboratories.
The two-year, £75m construction phase is due to begin this month and will be undertaken by Alfred McAlpine in partnership with Haden Young.
Alfred McAlpine, who will also provide facilities management for the hospital, secured the contract based on a proven track record in PFI deals, along with the capability to manage design and construction as well as ongoing management and maintenance.
Project director Ross Ballingall, who leads the Alfred McAlpine Capital Projects/Haden Young operation on the scheme, said: "Our ability to bring this type of project in against a tight budget, with unrivalled quality of design, and under challenging site conditions, makes us well placed to deliver the new Addenbrookes Hospital facility.
"Our capabilities in ongoing maintenance and management also means that we take an integrated approach to design, build and facilities management, which brings its own cost and value benefits."
