Remanufactured engines from Cat
Caterpillar has opened its first engine remanufacturing facility
outside of the Americas at Shrewsbury.
Housed in the Old Sentinel Works that Cat inherited when it
purchased Perkins Engines, the centre will remanufacture engines
for Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Having been fully stripped, cleaned and inspected, the engines are
rebuilt to their original tolerances and carry the same warranty as
a new unit.
A remanufactured engine will cost around three quarters of the
price of a new unit. However, this can be reduced to 50% or less if
the customer's old engine is usable for remanufacture.
Cat said it is the largest player in the global £43bn engine
remanufacturing industry with dedicated plants in the US, Mexico
and now the UK.
The 200-strong Shrewsbury workforce also remanufactures Rolls Royce
and Perkins engines, specialist transmissions for the Ministry of
Defence and track rollers.
