Construction fatalities reach 51

The number of fatalities in construction has reached 51 following three deaths in the last month.

Fatality 51 occurred after a 36-year-old male was killed when he was struck by a 360 degree excavator yesterday (Monday) morning on Windmill Demolition’s contract for the Albert Park Inn in Salford.

It is not known if the casual worker was employed by the principle contractor or by subcontractor Wilkinson Construction.

Both the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and Manchester police are investigating the incident.

Fatality 50 saw a 42-year-old worker die when he fell from a roof at a site in Leystone, east London, on 12 November.

The unnamed man was working on a roofing contract for Wilmot Roofing when he fell into the rear of the site.

The worker died in hospital two days after the incident.

Investigations are still being carried out.

Fatality 49 involved a member of the public when a 41-year-old man drove into the back of a maintenance vehicle, owned by contractor Ennstone Thistle, in the early hours of 27 October on the A9 between Kingussie and Newtonmore in Scotland.

An HSE investigation is still underway.
