Multiplex site gets timber green light

Greenpeace found "no immediate" breaches of timber procurement on its visit to Multiplex’s £757m Wembley project last week.

The environmental group said it had a "positive meeting" with the project team. Timber used in hoardings and on temporary works at the north London site appeared to be from sustainable sources, a Greenpeace spokesman said.

However, paperwork supplied by Multiplex had yet to be scrutinised by Greenpeace as CJ went to press.

"On the surface it seems that Multiplex is taking a very detailed approach to using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) timber.

However, the main bulk of timber use on fixtures and fittings has yet to come online," the Greenpeace spokesman said.

"We have also been given a huge pile of paper to wade through. Once we have looked through this we will go back to the contractor and give it our conclusions."

The project’s client, Wembley National Stadium, told CJ that it had clearly stated to Multiplex that FSC timber should be used on the project.

The Greenpeace spokesman also revealed that an investigation is being carried out on Caddick Construction’s refurbishment of Lincoln City & County Museum into the type of timber being used on the project.

"We have only received a brief note from the architect that an investigation is under way to check that all timber used on the project is from sustainable sources," he said.

"We will be keeping a close eye on developments," the spokesman added.

Caddick Construction told CJ that all timber used on the project came from sustainable sources. However, it is not known whether the timber being used is FSC-approved.
