Daewoo is planning to enter the zero tailswing and telehandler
markets once its sale to Doosan has gone through.
Dae-Ryong Kang, executive managing director of Daewoo's
Construction Equipment division, said preferred bidder Doosan will
want to invest in the manufacturer's research and development arm
and its production facilities.
Daewoo currently manufactures excavators, wheel loaders, industrial
fork lifts and skid steers, but Kang said: "To survive we need
other items."
He is looking at zero tailswing excavators and telehandlers, but
said the company would look to buy-in telehandler technology as
there was not the in-house capacity to design the machine.
The firm will upgrade its excavators and wheel loaders in 2005/2006
when the next round of emission legislation comes into force.
By 2008, Kang plans to move the company's Incheon factories in
South Korea to a new site around 200km away and to make Daewoo the
world's third largest excavator manufacturer above 5t.
Production in its Belgian factory will increase to 100 units per
month next year, Kang said.
