Edmund Nuttall is in the frame for a landmark £20m art gallery at Margate, Kent.
Sources say the firm has brushed aside pitches from Laing O’Rourke and Costain for the new Turner Contemporary Art Gallery project.
The gallery will be built 8m off the waterfront, connected to the town’s pier by a bridge.
Designed by UK architect Spence Associates and Norweg-ian practice Snohetta, the gallery is shaped like a submarine’s conning tower.
The building, named after artist JMW Turner, who had strong links with the town, is due to open in 2007. The centre will include 750m2 of gallery space, an education area, café and shop.
