Amec wins £53m deal to design and deliver gas storage facility

Amec has been awarded a £53m contract to design and deliver a new gas storage facility in East Yorkshire for Scottish and Southern Energy.

The contractor will undertake the design, engineering, procurement and installation of the Central Processing Area process plant near Hornsea, including three 20-megawatt compressors, controls, instrumentation and supporting infrastructure, to enable the plant to be operated remotely from an existing facility 16km away.

Engineering design is being carried out at Amec’s Darlington operations centre. On-site operations will begin in May 2005 with first gas expected on stream by December 2006. Overall completion of the Central Processing Area is scheduled for July 2007.

"Gas imports to the UK will continue to increase as North Sea reserves decrease and gas storage will become increasingly important in maintaining supplies,” said Steve Lee, managing director of Amec's industrial business.

“This contract, one of a number we are carrying out for the gas storage and compression market, reinforces Amec’s leading position as a sustainable provider of services to the energy industry.”
