Construction still lacks the female touch

More than one-in-10 girls are interested in the construction industry, according to an Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) report.

Free to Choose: Tackling Gender Barriers to Better Jobs, also highlights that six-in-ten construction employers think that taking on more female recruits could help cure skills shortages.

However, schools are not doing enough to ensure that girls’ interest bears fruition with employment.

One female trainee plumber told the EOC she was discouraged from considering careers in traditionally male industries. Just 2% of construction apprenticeships are female.

The report states that the government needs to draw up a national agenda that opens up choice and challenges stereotyping.

Careers education should become statutory and subject to inspection on gender equality.
Furthermore, every construction employer should be encouraged to offer at least one female work placement.

CITB-ConstructionSkills has made diversity one of its key targets. The Diversity Strategy will be highlighted in a supplement with the 27 April issue of CJ.
