A guaranteed 100% leak-free, push-fit system for coupling hydraulic
pipes to valve blocks and cylinders operating at up to 400bar has
been developed by Oystertec.
In the threadless TL system, the traditional screw thread is
replaced with an undercut hole, into which a simple collet system
is inserted. A male connector carrying the O ring seal is pushed
into the collet and locked by pressing in a plastic locking ring by
hand.
Fittings for ¼ inch to 2 inch pipe sizes are available and
pipes can be disconnected by withdrawing the locking ring using a
screwdriver. Both parts are reusable and a range of converter
connectors (traditional screw thread on one end, and undercut port
on the other) are available.
There is a separate low-pressure version for control systems,
return or suction pipes, which can handle pressures up to 10bar,
and require a special tool to withdraw a fitted connection.
Beyond the benefit to plant manufacturers (lower material and
assembly costs), the company said replacing hoses or hydraulic
components on machines in the field will be considerably easier. It
is looking to license the system to established connector
manufacturers.
