Balfour Beatty death case postponed

A prosecution of Balfour Beatty by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following the death of a road worker while the A5 Nesscliffe bypass was being built has been postponed until next month.

The contractor was due to appear in Shrewsbury Magistrates Court today (Friday) charged with failing to protect the health, safety and welfare of employee Stephen Hayward, 43, who died after being hit by a lorry during work in October 2002.

But, according to an HSE spokeswoman, the case has now been postponed “for at least four weeks” as the judge is “tied up with another case”.
