Vibration ruling set to focus on users

The new Vibration Regulations that come into force on 6 July will place the emphasis on
compliance with the user, and not the manufacturer, Brian Coles, vibration policy adviser with the Health & Safety Executive, told delegates.
Whole body vibration regulations impose an Exposure Action Level, above which the employer must take sufficient steps to minimise a worker's exposure and an Exposure Limit Value, which sets a ceiling on the vibration one person can endure in an eight-hour period.
While new equipment purchased after July 2007 must comply immediately, and there is a transitional period through to 2010 for old equipment, Coles warned that employers must start assessing their workers' exposure as of July.
See the May issue of PMJ for more information on whole body vibration.
