Three firms line up for £50m skyscraper deal

Laing O’Rourke, Mowlem and Costain could be in the running for a £50m Liverpool skyscraper  after developer Chieftain Construction unveiled its plans last week.

General manager Sean O’Sullivan told CJ the project is a UK first for the company, which works mostly on residential greenfield projects in Ireland. He said: “We’ve been looking more and more into international and brownfield sites. We’re now
looking at the UK.”

The 32-storey tower will also be the most ambitious project Chieftain has undertaken to date – the company is traditionally involved in low-rise residential, student and mixed-use projects.

Although Chieftain builds in Ireland, O’Sullivan said the company will act as developer on the Liverpool project and will look to the “usual three or four contractors active in the North West”.

He named Laing O’Rourke, Mowlem and Costain as
possible suitors.
