April orders increase 11% to £3.5bn


April was a productive month as new orders increased 11% to nearly £3.5bn compared with £3.1bn in the same month a year ago.

The latest data from the Department of Trade & Industry shows that new orders from the public housing, private housing, other public and private commercial sectors increased, most noticeably in the latter's case by 37%.

In the three months to April, total new orders were up just 1% to just shy of £10.5bn. All sectors were up except other public and private commercial, down 8% and 11% respectively.

In the year to April, total orders were 13% ahead at nearly £39.5bn. All sectors posted double digit growth, with the exception of infrastructure, which grew just 3%.
