Clark ready for squad rotation of subbies

Scottish contractor Clark Contracts has completed an 18-month process to whittle down its subcontractors from 2,200 to 400.
The £31m turnover company is now intent on operating a 'squad rotation system' for its stable of key subcontractors. "We originally looked to make improvements in about 12 subcontractor disciplines, with a minimum of between eight and 10 subbies in each, all operating on a level playing field," commercial director Iain Blair said.
"It's important not to overload the top two," he added. "It's a common failure in the construction industry to swamp good ones, which makes them become bad companies. We've appointed dedicated trade managers to monitor the workload."
Clark canvassed all departments to score individual subbies and used this to set a minimum standard. Around 10% of subcontractors removed were accounted for by firms that had only been used on a one-off basis, precluding the kind of long-term relationship Clark is seeking to establish.
