Modular firms using outdated techniques
Modular building makers are using outdated assembly techniques, and
are in danger of losing work to low-cost labour economies, claimed
buildings maker Vanguard.
The company is planning a factory in Cambridgeshire that will
dispense with construction skills and instead use "process-led"
techniques.
A Vanguard spokesman told CJ the company plans to knock 20% off the
cost of modular buildings by getting rid of skilled labour, such as
joiners and electricians. He said: "Standard modular builders take
everybody to the box to work on it. Why are you paying £30,000
for a tradesman, when you should be paying for traditional factory
labour? We don't fit the windows and skirtings using joiners at
different stages, we put them into the box as
sub-assemblies."
The company is working with Cambridgeshire County Council spin-off
Smartlife on housing in the region. The spokesman said the company
plans to make and erect steel frame modular buildings for
housebuilders in
the area.
