EA gets tough on waste
Demolition contractors are being warned that the Environment Agency
(EA) is taking a very tough line on the strict enforcement of the
Hazardous Waste Regulations, with swingeing fines being imposed for
failure to comply.
Howard Button, national secretary of the National Federation of
Demolition Contractors, said: "I have seen reports of contractors
receiving very heavy fines, up to £14,000, for holding an
asbestos waste container in the works depot without a waste
management licence."
Button said his attention had also been drawn to the fact that the
EA is taking an equally strict approach to the policing of firms'
record keeping in relation to the movement of special waste.
