Working at Height Regulations 2005

In 2003/04 falls from height accounted for 67 fatal accidents at work and nearly 4000 major injuries. They remain the single biggest cause of workplace deaths and one of the main causes of major injury. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to all work at height where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury.

Environmental Information Regulations 2004; Asbestos Update

With new duties to provide environmental regulation in force - what steps should those affected be taking? Caroline May (Hammonds) examines this issue as well as the statutory duty to manage asbestos which took effect in November 2004, with additional reviews on recent case law on asbestos claims.

Ceequal & T5

In this programme we talk to Roger Venables of Crane Environmental about Ceequal, the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme. We discuss it development, benefits and how it can be applied at all stages of a project. We also go on location to Heathrow Terminal 5 where they were recently awarded an ‘Excellent’ Ceequal rating for their work on the Twin Rivers Diversion.

Information & Consultation of Employees Regulations

Victoria Larsson (Wedlake Bell) looks at the Regulations and how they operate – do they empower employees – and what is the scope of new obligations imposed on employers?

Cwm Relief Road

This programme looks at design history through to construction of the Cwm bypass in the South Wales Valleys . We investigate the ground conditions in the areas, which are prone to land slips. We discuss the problems this caused for both design and construction and how these problems were overcome.

Freedom of Information Act

Keith Wotherspoon of Freshfields reviews the scheme of the Act, how it can be enforced and in particular examines the tensions that arise for practitioners, public authorities and any commercial entities between the policy of freedom to request information and commercial competition, where a public authority is requested to disclose sensitive information about a commercial competitor. We also have a special interview with the Assistant Information Commissioner, Gerrard Tracey, on the Act and its implications.

Diamond Light Source

This programme describes the science facility in South Oxfordshire , which will create a uniquely bright and intense light for research and experimental purposes. We will explore the engineering challenges brought on by working so closely with scientific research, including tight engineering tolerances both in design and construction. We talk to the client, project manager, designer and contractor to see how they have worked together to design and construct this unique building.

Paddington Bridge : Part 1

This programme looks into the background and development of the Paddington Long Term Vehicular Access Project (LTVA). The project aims to improve access for taxis to the station with the increasing number of passengers using taxis for their onward journeys. We look at the development of the project and some of the challenges they faced along the way.

May/June 2005

Wembley Park development

The programme features the client and contractors in this redevelopment and capacity of Wembley Park Tube station, to be completed in time for the opening of the new Wembley National Station. A series of station closures was devised in order to complete the project within this tight timescale. The programme investigates the different closures are their effect on the project programme.

Trends in Adjudication

Adjudication continues to be a popular way of resolving construction disputes, but also continues to generate issues relating to its processes and procedures. In a studio discussion with our guest Rupert Choat we look at recent trends and issues on adjudication and review the Government Consultation Paper published in March this year.

Disability Discrimination Act 1995

Barrister Tony Ross (Outer Temple Chambers) deals with modifications made to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 made late last year, as well as applicable Codes of Practice and litigation on the definition of disability and provisions regarding reasonable adjustment. The programme necessarily raises issues that may well concern employer and employee clients alike.

The Road Ahead – economic outlook for the UK construction industry 2004-2009

Interviewed in the studio, two of the seminar’s speakers, Joe Martin, Executive Director of BCIS, and Allan Wilén, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association, discuss the state of the construction industry forecasts for future market conditions.

Working Abroad

Those advising employers and employees in the context of overseas operations will find this programme to be of interest. It deals with a number of legal issues and practical pitfalls arising out of employers legal responsibilities for staff and contractors deployed overseas.

Asbestos – how to reduce PI liability

Interviewed on location, David Zuckerman and Paul Spence of Advanced Building Services discuss the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 which introduced a requirement to manage and control the risks associated with asbestos-containing materials. In this programme, they look at the requirements of the regulations and how practitioners can limit their exposure to potential negligence claims while exercising their duty of care to clients.

A1(M) Darrington to Dishforth

The programme features the Highways Agency, Departments Nominee and DBFO Co for this £245M project - the largest currently in construction in the UK . It discusses the innovative payment mechanism, traffic management, use of recycled materials on site and the effect of an unexpected archaeological find.

Crawley Fastway

Crawley Fastway is a guided bus system, serving Crawley , Horley and Gatwick, aimed at reducing the number of private car journeys made within the area. In this programme, we talk to Fastway project managers to discover why the guided bus way scheme was chosen and how it uses smart technology to distinguish it from other bus services. We also discover why branding and communicating with the community are so important to the Fastway Partners.
