FOLKESTONE HYTHE & ROMNEY MARSH SHEPWAY DISTRICT COUNCIL
HYTHE TO FOLKESTONE HARBOUR BEACH MANAGEMENT
BEACH RECYCLING AND REGRADING 2005 - 2007
Shepway District Council has an ongoing beach management programme to recycle and regrade its shingle beaches on the South Kent Coast between Fisherman's Beach, Hythe and Folkestone Harbour.
The purpose of the works is to maintain the shape of the shingle beaches that form the primary coastal defences and reduce the risk of coastal flooding and erosion. Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified contractors to carry out the works.
The main components of the works are:
* The excavation, transportation and depositing of between 16 & 24,000 cubic metres of shingle.
* The regrading of up to 5 km of shingle beaches to reshape the crest line.
The total duration of the works is estimated at 10 weeks divided into 4 separate visits programmed over an 18-month period.
The beaches are located close to residential properties and open to the general public. The successful contractor will be expected to manage the works and put measures in place to safeguard the general public. They will also be required to actively participate in public relations.
The estimated value of works is up to £250,000.
Shepway District Council is to draw up a shortlist of contractors capable of undertaking this work in accordance with the following list
of requirements.
